Quick answer
Mini-split installation typically runs $2,000 to $4,500 per zone in 2026. Single-zone wall-mount in smaller rooms (9-12k BTU) starts at $2,000-$3,200; larger rooms (18-24k BTU) $3,200-$4,500. Multi-zone systems (2-4 heads on one outdoor unit) total $5,500-$12,000 — per-zone cost drops vs. separate single-zone units.
Mini-split pricing across our service area tracks national HomeGuide averages of $2,000-$4,500 per zone installed. Common installs include High Desert garage conversions, ADUs, equestrian-property workshops, and additions where central ductwork cannot reach, plus Inland Empire bonus rooms, sunrooms, and AC-only retrofits in pre-1970 Riverside, San Bernardino, and Mira Loma homes. Multi-zone systems (one outdoor unit running 2-4 indoor heads) lower per-zone cost vs. separate single-zone installs. Cold-climate variable-speed inverter units (Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Daikin Aurora) work well at all High Desert elevations including Wrightwood (6,000 ft) where standard heat pumps fail.
What it costs
Real numbers, not estimates.
| Range | Tier | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| $2,000-$3,200 | Single-zone 9-12k BTU | One bedroom, office, or ADU. Wall-mount indoor unit. |
| $3,200-$4,500 | Single-zone 18-24k BTU | Larger room or open living space. More refrigerant, larger compressor. |
| $5,500-$8,000 | Multi-zone (2 heads) | Two indoor heads on one outdoor unit. Common for ADU + main house combo. |
| $8,000-$12,000 | Multi-zone (3-4 heads) | Whole-home zoned system. Up to 8 heads possible on one outdoor unit. |
| +$200-$500 | Cold-climate premium | Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Daikin Aurora, Carrier Infinity for high elevations. |
Per-zone installed range based on JC Energy Solutions invoices across HD properties. Multi-zone systems share one outdoor unit for lower per-zone cost.
What drives the price up
Why your quote might be higher.
-
Multi-zone system count
More indoor heads = more refrigerant, longer line-set runs, larger outdoor unit. 4-zone systems run 60-80% more than equivalent single-zone install per head.
-
Cold-climate inverter units
Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Daikin Aurora, Carrier Infinity premium for sub-30°F operation. Adds $200-$500 per zone vs. standard SEER2 14-16. Mandatory for Wrightwood, recommended for Phelan and Oak Hills.
-
Long line-set runs
Manufacturers spec maximum line-set length (typically 50-100 ft) before capacity penalties. Longer runs need larger equipment or relocated outdoor unit. Adds $200-$600 per zone in equipment + labor.
-
Concealed line-set work
Hiding refrigerant line sets inside walls (vs. exterior raceway covers) adds $300-$800 per zone in additional labor and drywall work.
What drives the price down
How to save money.
-
Multi-zone shared outdoor unit
One outdoor compressor unit running 2-4 indoor heads costs less per zone than separate single-zone installs. Saves $500-$1,500 vs. running separate systems.
-
No ductwork needed
Mini-splits skip ductwork entirely (saves $2,500-$11,000 vs. central system install with new ducts). Refrigerant lines + small wall hole only.
-
SCE heat pump rebates
Cold-climate mini-split heat pumps qualify for SCE rebates of $300-$1,500 on qualifying tiers. Pulls install cost closer to standard pricing.
Rebates that apply in 2026
Real rebates.
SCE heat pump rebates apply to cold-climate mini-split heat pumps: $300-$1,500 depending on SEER2 tier. Federal IRA 25C credit expired December 31, 2025. SoCalGas rebates do not apply (mini-splits are electric only). Manufacturer rebates (Mitsubishi Cool Cash, Daikin) appear seasonally with $200-$800 instant savings. We pull current rebate sheets at quote time.
Honest take from the owner
Joey's straight answer.
Joey's honest take: mini-splits are the right answer for specific HD scenarios, not a universal HVAC replacement. Best fits: garage conversions, ADUs, additions where ducts cannot reach, single hot rooms in larger homes, equestrian-property workshops, and Wrightwood cabins where central ductwork would be overkill. They are NOT the right answer for whole-home replacement of a working central system in most HD tract homes (central air is more cost-efficient when ductwork already exists). For Wrightwood and Apple Valley equestrian properties especially, we have done many multi-zone installs combining a central heat pump for the main house with mini-splits for detached structures, all qualifying for combined SCE rebates.
